GENERATIONS TOGETHER (GT) is an international center for  intergenerational studies at the University of Pittsburgh. It furthers program development, education and training, research, and dissemination, and technical support that helps professionals acquire the knowledge, understanding, and skills to integrate intergenerational components into their work.  Furthermore, it supports university/ community collaboration and public policy initiatives that result in effective intergenerational partnership that positively impact children, youth and older persons in our communities.

Distinguishing Features of Generations Together's Activities:

• Develops innovative intergenerational program models

• Evaluates local, regional, and national intergenerational programs.

• Creates and teaches a multidisciplinary graduate/undergraduate course  on intergenerational issues.

• Provides training and technical assistance for professionals at all levels of career development who want to develop, replicate, or evaluate intergenerational model.

• Trains and certifies professionals to become intergenerational specialists.

• Conducts research on issues of intergenerational significance.

• Authors, publishes, and disseminates print an media materials in support of intergenerational principles

• Maintains a resource library of print and media materials that serves an international community of individuals and organizations interested in intergenerational topics.

• Advocates public and social policy, locally and nationally, on intergenerational concerns.

Generations Together, by advancing the development of the intergenerational field, seeks to create a world in which mutually beneficial interactions between young and old are a natural component of contemporary life.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Generations Together's contributions to the intergenerational human services field include:

• The development of intergenerational programs.

• Technical Assistance to agencies and systems.

• Evaluation of program models.

• Preparation of print and media materials for program replication.

• Acquisition and dissemination of program information.

• Collaboration on public policy efforts that affect the future of young and old.

Generations Together's contributions to the development of intergenerational studies include:

• A survey of intergenerational studies activities in higher education.

• The introduction of intergenerational courses at the University of Pittsburgh.

• A multi-university collaborative to develop competencies related to the intergenerational field.

• Training, including an annual institute for intergenerational professionals.

• Research on the impact and significance of the intergenerational field.

• The establishment of an Intergenerational Resource Center.

As a national leader in both approaches to the intergenerational movement, Generations Together seeks to promote intergenerational activity as a positive force in society, as a professional field, and as a rewarding area of academic inquiry
