SEED GRANTS FOR INTERGENERATIONAL PROJECTS

On July 17, 2000 an awards event was held at United Way to acknowledge 24 recipients of their new seed grant awards to develop intergenerational programs during the project year August 1, 2000 - July 31, 2001.

Purpose of Seed Grants:
The primary purpose of the seed grants is to generate new intergenerational projects in the region that address the problems (e.g. school dropouts, social isolation) of inadequate support groups for young and old. The seed grants are also intended to encourage working partnerships between agencies that serve children and youth and those that serve older adults. We hope that the projects developed through these grants will encourage new intergenerational collaboration among the region's agencies and systems.

Amount of Award: $1,500
Length of Award: 12 months

The purpose of the Seeds to Success Conference was two-fold; to bring together representatives from social service agencies in Allegheny County and surrounding counties to discuss how intergenerational programs can address and resolve some of the problems confronting their communities; and to begin a process of preparing social service professionals to develop successful intergenerational programs.
Invited to the conference were representatives of agencies serving the community's children, youth and older adult populations. The conference activities were designed to support the attending professionals in their intergenerational initiatives by helping them find partners to collaborate in intergenerational program development and by providing initial training in skills needed for successful program development. To help motivate the participants in this process, Seeds to Success made available to all participants mini-grant applications for two partnering agencies, one serving children and youth and one serving older adults, who would collaborate in the development of an intergenerational program.
