The Intergenerational Arts and Education Project in Rural Schools is a partnership involving Generations Together's Artist Resource Program; the Art and Gerontology Departments at Slippery Rock University; and the Midwestern Pennsylvania Intermediate Unit IV. The project provides intergenerational arts experience between local older artists and middle and high school students in three counties in western Pennsylvania.

The goals of this project are:

  • To enable middle and high school students in rural areas to understand the role of the arts in contributing to the overall quality of life in their community.
  • To enable these students to develop meaningful relationships with the local older artists as role models, mentors, and friends.
  • To provide opportunities for the older artists in rural areas to share their skills and values in the arts with the younger generation, and in turn, to provide a vehicle by which the worth of these same artists is acknowledged in their communities.
Funding for the project is provided by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania, and is based on the need in rural areas for a greater appreciation of the arts, improved intergenerational relations, and a stronger sense of cultural identity.
