What I like best about this program is that these young students experience for the first time an ability to create a work of art that receives recognition from many persons: their peers, their older artist mentor, and their classroom teacher. - ARP Artist Mentor

The  Intergenerational Arts & Education Program (IAEP) uses the skills of the community's senior master artists in schools and other community settings. The IAEP links artists age 50 and older with teachers or community project supervisors to plan and develop art experiences that develop intergenerational relationships as well as understanding of the artistic process. Artists, representing a variety of visual, literary, and performing arts, work with children and youth in public and private schools and other community settings.

IAEP facilitates the sharing of art and cultural heritage between generations, uses the arts to develop meaningful relationships across generations, and strengthens school-community relations.

IAEP variations include:

  • Council Arts links high school students, professional artists, and frail elderly in adult day care to experience friendships through arts activities, performance and festival exhibits.

  • The Intergenerational Arts Festival links students with older artists for hands-on artistic workshops in a one-day festival setting.

  • An intergenerational photography exhibit highlights the work of high school students and an older adult master photographer. The exhibit has been seen in local venues and at conferences across the country.
